The BETT Awards are held in London every year with the most prominent players and stakeholders in education. The judges of the awards are known for their knowledge of ICT educational resources and selected from experienced teachers, education consultants and advisers, and high profile ICT journalists.
While the final ceremony will take place at the Troxy in London on 23rd January, the finalists were announced last week. This year Mozaik got shortlisted in not one, not two, but three different categories so we are truly honoured to get the chance to win it all with LabCamera, Mozaik3D app and mozaBook in 2019.
Our web-cam based science laboratory software, the LabCamera became Finalist in the category of “Classroom Aids for Learning, Teaching and Assessment” which is amazing since it was the first time that we entered Bett Awards with this compact, smart solution.Many of you may already know the program, but for those who haven’t come across or tried LabCamera before, we prepared a short review of the main features here. Kinematics, Motion Cam, Microscope… no matter which area of science you’re teaching, we put everything at your fingertips in one program and we are very thankful for the positive feedback we received from the reviewers.
Mozaik3D app is another first-timer among our products nominated to the award, so we are thrilled that it is running for the title of “Educational Apps” right off the bat. Mozaik3D app is available for Android devices and can be considered as the next step in the evolution of another application, called mozaWeb 3D viewer: all the 1200+ 3D animations in one place, login, subscription, filters, 3D infosheet, and related 3D scenes.Reading about it is also nice, but if you would like to give it a try, please feel free to do so. Last, but not least, here is the winner of Academic’s choice, European Business, and EdTech Awards, the mozaBook educational presentation software. After 2016 and 2017, mozaBook got shortlisted in the category of “International Digital Education Resource” again which is, of course, a huge accomplishment for the whole Mozaik team.Only those products can survive in this category which have a proven track record of success in the international education market and able to show evidence that the product has aided teaching and learning in a schools around the world.

For kids, summer is not only a perfect time to do, let’s say, absolutely nothing, but also a great opportunity to work on their “craft”, practice and deepen their knowledge in areas in which they’re really interested or improve their skill-set where they feel a little bit stuck.If you think about it, that is almost the case for professional athletes as well. After a long, grinding season they still need to prepare for the next challenge both mentally and physically, which makes it essential to improve every aspect of their game as much as they can during the “off-season”. This is even more true of this year as the best football players in the world are currently playing on the biggest stage in their career thanks to the FIFA World Cup, so their well-deserved break is yet to be taken.
That being said, let me give you some ideas and recommend a couple of randomly selected tools from mozaWeb that you can pass along to your children in order to get them ready for the next season at school or just to pass the time on rainy days during the vacation period!
What is the most important when learning a foreign language?
“Words, words, words”, says Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and rightfully so.
Learning a new language is really cool and fun, especially if you get enough positive feedback to make you feel that learning comes easy. However, if we’re not using the language every day, it’s equally easy to get out of rhythm and forget most of the expressions we picked up previously. Any language teacher can tell you that active and passive vocabulary are not the same at all so we have to make sure that we keep our “database” as up-to-date as possible.In Lan(g)ame, just select the language pair you wish to practice and try to score as many points as you can by determining the meaning of words.
Kids will surely enjoy it, because it’s quick and truly fascinating. What’s more, the wide array of available languages in the app may give them some extra motivation to start learning something new as well!

Well, sometimes it’s more than difficult to make our children feel that way, but combining something so... let’s put it nicely, theoretical with a cool game might just be the right solution.Oh, and if we’re talking about Maths, we have to mention the all-time favourite, the one and only Number Hero, which is also a sneaky way to get the kids to practice mathematical operations.In this game, the rule is pretty simple: if your answer is correct, you are free to jump to the next island. If not, well… you’ll be eaten by a weirdly satisfied shark who is gentleman enough to wear a handkerchief in the water. Tough luck.
The good news is that there is a whole variety of ways to expand your knowledge in the subject of history outside of the classroom, such as visiting museums, historical buildings, going on a sightseeing tour or talking to your grandparents to learn more about local and contemporary history.Besides that, we can offer the Time Machine tool which is basically an interactive timeline where you can search for any historical individual and put them in the center of a diagram. Around the selected person a whole bunch of similarly significant people will appear, but you have the option to manage the results as the profession, nationality, or time period can be also set.Once you have the whole crew on your plate (for example, William Shakespeare with his contemporaries and fellow writers), you can generate an exercise with one click . The goal is to match the names with the images on the tray which is an exceptionally good way to refresh the memories about important historical dates and figures.
The possibilities are of course endless...but let this be a motto: learning can and does take place everywhere. Not only for us, adults, but also for our children, two and a half months are just too long and too much precious time is wasted on being completely off.

Easily manageable, cost-effective, and up-to-date… let’s be honest, it can be a real struggle sometimes to find the perfect tool for the great scientist of the future. That’s why I’d like to explore our newest application, LabCamera (available within the mozaBook software or as a stand-alone solution) and quickly introduce its main modules.
LabCamera is an exploration and data logging laboratory which makes it easy for students and teachers to carry out scientific observations and measurements. You only need a computer, the software, and yes, as the name suggests, a standard webcam. The main strength of the software lies within its simplicity as you can build the best technology ever, if no school can afford or implement it, it will not be much help to students in the long run. That being said, let’s take a closer look at some LabCamera features!
To put it simply, graphs are cool and kids love them in Physic lessons, especially if they can get them in real-time. First, take the footage of your webcam or a pre-recorded video, select a couple of objects (colorful balls, toy cars, etc.), then let the Kinematics module track the movement of the object for you. In the final graph that can be exported with one click, students can analyze all the details about the speed or acceleration of the selected object.Be prepared for future conversations at home, like:
“How was school, honey?”
“Nothing special… we just analyzed a horizontal and vertical graph of displacement, velocity and acceleration of some balloons.”
2.) Time lapse
Some processes in nature, such as ice melting, can be difficult to observe and even more difficult to successfully track, so the time lapse function can be a lifesaver here. The software takes still shots and stitches these images into a coherent stream of video, while your task is simply to set the playback speed of the video.Of course, time lapse also comes in handy during joyful moments in the kitchen, such as baking the perfect muffin.
3.) Motion cam
With the Motion cam function, students are able to capture intimate moments in nature. The trick is quite simple, yet incredibly effective: the camera records only when it detects movement in front of the device.The benefit? You don’t have to wait endless hours in the garden or in the forest for your best hummingbird pal to show up; it spares a lot of time for you and makes it easier to edit and manage your videos for class.
Did you know that you can take macro photos with your webcam? This is exactly the feature that the Microscope module was built for, but as always, it’s possible to analyze 3rd party images as well. Once you’ve turned yourself into a professional photographer / scientist, you can learn more about proportions, sizes, and even measurement methodology.In this case, I’ve just measured the length and area of a sugar molecule in two steps.
5.) Universal logger
The most valuable asset of the Universal logger is that it’s possible to log any type of measurement instruments in school or at home. Whether a digital or fluid-based display, the software picks up on the signals of, let’s say, a thermometer with the help of the built-in camera and connects it to your computer.
The real fun comes in when you decide to track not one, but three devices at the same time and carry out comparative experiments. All in all, it’s definitely a super versatile and helpful tool.
Your starting lineup is the same as in the previous cases. The webcam is doing the background work, while you’re analyzing the results of the experiment. Have you ever tried to see through the European flight radar or the chaos created by a bunch of ants?Here you go, the heat map might just be the perfect solution for class.
7.) Graph challenge
It’s an old, but universal truth that kids learn the fastest and the most efficient when they don’t even realize they are actually learning. This tool is a great opportunity for students to channel their inner imitation artists as the main rule is to follow the predefined curve, while the software is following your moves.

We are really pleased to inform all of our readers that the delegation of Mozaik Education has returned from our latest trip abroad. This time around we travelled to a quite unique country - Kazakhstan. What really made this journey special was the fact that it was the 5th time the Mozaik crew landed in this amazing Central Asian country.Our six-day visit was packed with different events and venues where we presented our state-of-the-art educational solutions to the public. It all started with Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS), located in the fabulous city of Almaty. Currently, Kazakhstan is on the verge of big changes in education, which is implied by the shift to the trilingual model of schooling (now pupils are taught Kazakh, Russian and English). NIS already serves as a good example of how such things can be implemented and work in reality.
We were also offered a campus tour in order to take a close look at the school’s infrastructure and it’s safe to say that we were quite impressed by what we had seen and could only wish all schools around the globe were similarly well-equipped. Finally, we gave a presentation about mozaBook and mozaWeb in a huge conference hall to the teachers of the school which was followed by a lively conversation with the participants who were all extremely excited.The next day we were fortunate enough to visit the Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University in Almaty, which is one of the leading institutes in Central Asia. Presenting to university experts is also a wonderful opportunity for us to grow as we can also learn a great deal from these visits. At Mozaik we never miss the chance to share not only our experiences, but obtain new ones as well. After our presentation, we also agreed on a mutual cooperation so we are looking forward to hosting a delegation from Abai National University at our headquarters in Szeged, Hungary soon.The highlight of our visit was attending the International and Practical Conference “Modernization of Educational Resources: Experience and Perspectives” organized by the scientific republican educational centre “Uchebnik”. Geographically, Kazakhstan is sandwiched between Russia, China and the Middle East, which is a huge advantage for the country. Combining the best practices from all over the world, Kazakhstan is striving to become one of the largest hubs in various fields of expertise, and obviously, education is no exception.
The two-day event was dedicated to addressing the most problematic and burning issues of today’s education in the area. We think that some of the solutions have already been found within the walls of the Kazakh State Women’s Pedagogical Institute, but of course, further questions are yet to be explored.A big step forward, the memorandum of cooperation signed by the Scientific Republican Educational Centre “Uchebnik”, the Kazakh State Women’s Pedagogical Institute, and Mozaik Education can also be viewed as recognition of our collaboration on bettering education in Kazakhstan over the past few years.Taking into consideration that Hungarians and Kazakhs share bits of their heritage and history, we do not say a final goodbye to this wonderful country, but we just say it for now.

Six months ago we had the chance to host three amazing German teachers at our dedicated training center in Szeged, Hungary. The media team of the Mittelpunkt Elementary School travelled all the way from Haiger with a clear purpose: learn about the mozaLearn system as much as possible, then implement our digital solutions, mozaBook and mozaWeb in their wonderful elementary school, called Mittelpunktgrundschule Haiger.After successfully completing the 3-day training, the team got equipped with the knowledge that they could pass on to their fellow educators in their hometown school. They downloaded and activated mozaBook on all the five interactive boards of the institution so there was nothing left standing in the way of beginning the real work with the educational software in the classroom.
According to Lukas Hoeser, the leader of the Media team, it was clear from the very beginning that mozaBook could offer a wide range of possibilities to everyone in the school, no matter what subjects they teach. “After a few lessons, our teachers in the school have quickly realized how motivated and focused the students are in the classroom. All of them are eager to come forward to work with the board and that’s the most important” said Lukas.In their detailed report they highlight some practical advices and experiences with mozaBook as well that proved to be especially helpful in case of specific subjects. For instance, in Science education the 3D animations have been a huge boost for the kids to understand how external and internal organs work and what certain body parts are responsible for.But they also mention other areas, such as German lessons in the 4th grade, where now the teachers can easily engage the little ones in classroom activities with the help of the subject-related tools in the software and the digitized images from children’s books and short stories. The students got simply hooked on reading and they can’t wait to discuss their ideas and thoughts in the classroom!
As Lukas says “mozaBook has become the part of the everyday life in our school. It spares a lot of time and effort while we’re preparing for lessons; what’s more it motivates not only the students, but also the teachers in their daily work.”In the next couple of months, the leadership of the elementary school is planning to equip the building with even more interactive boards and continue the use of mozaBook and mozaWeb.

Sechs Monate ist es nun her, dass wir in Szeged, Ungarn zu Gast waren. Nach drei spannenden Tagen, in denen wir eine Einführung in die Möglichkeiten des Mozabooks bekommen haben, waren wir davon überzeugt unbedingt mit der Software an unserer Grundschule arbeiten zu wollen.Schon während der Schulung staunten wir häufig darüber, wie innovativ und anschaulich sich Unterrichtsinhalte mit Hilfe des Programms präsentieren lassen. Zurück in Deutschland warteten wir voller Vorfreude auf die Lieferung und Installation unserer neuen digitalen Tafeln. Nach den Herbstferien war es endlich soweit und wir konnten das Mozabook zunächst auf fünf Tafeln downloaden.
Alle Klassenlehrer, die eine Tafel in ihrem Klassenraum nutzen konnten, bekamen von Mozaik einen Zugang, ebenso wie alle Fachkollegen in den betroffenen Klassen. Alle Kollegen, die nicht wie wir vom Medienteam das Glück hatten eine Schulung in Ungarn zu besuchen, bekamen eine Einführung in die Grundfunktionen der Software als Starthilfe. Inzwischen steht das Medienteam als Ansprechpartner für Fragen zu komplexeren Funktionen zur Verfügung. Viele Kollegen begannen direkt in Eigeninitiative das Mozabook in ihren Unterrichtsalltag zu integrieren. Die intuitive und häufig selbsterklärende Bedienbarkeit erleichterte allen Lehrern den Einstieg. Auch die zahlreichen Videotutorials boten dabei wichtige Hilfe. Am wichtigsten war jedoch, dass alle Lehrer schon nach wenigen Unterrichtsstunden feststellen konnten, wie motiviert, aufmerksam und begeistert die Kinder am Unterricht teilnahmen. Jeder Schüler wollte an der Tafel mitarbeiten. Dabei fiel den Kindern die Nutzung der Schreibwerkzeuge und anderer Tools von Beginn an sehr leicht.
Im Folgenden zeigen wir euch einige Unterrichtsbeispiele, die wir in Form von interaktiven Präsentationen in den ersten Wochen und Monaten erarbeitet haben:
Sachunterricht (Naturwissenschaft / Geografie / Geschichte)
Im zweiten Schuljahr fand eine Unterrichtseinheit zum Thema Haustiere statt. Eine Gruppe beschäftigte sich dabei mit dem Hund und konnte anhand des 3D-Modells die Körperteile und äußeren Organe kennen- und bestimmen lernen.
Im Geografie-Unterricht des vierten Schuljahres konnte altes Kartenmaterial des Landkreises digitalisiert werden. Auf diese Weise war es möglich den Schülern auf der Tafel übersichtlich die Grundlagen der Topographie näher zu bringen. Die Kinder präsentierten ihre Entdeckungen zu Flüssen, Städten, Dörfern und Gebirgen, zeichneten diese ein und beschrifteten.
In der Sexualerziehung des vierten Schuljahres waren außerdem die 3D-Modelle sehr hilfreich. Den Schülern konnten so sehr anschaulich die menschlichen Geschlechtsorgane, die Ovulation, die Menstruation, die Befruchtung von Eizellen und die Entwicklung eines Embryos bis zur Geburt präsentiert werden. Teilweise standen sogar nützliche Animationen zur Verfügung, die den 3D-Modellen Leben einhauchten.
Für einen physikalischen Versuch des zweiten Schuljahres zum Thema „Thermometer und Temperatur“ konnte in einer Gruppenarbeit das Versuchsvideo zum Flaschenthermometer verwendet werden. Den Kindern wurden schrittweise der Versuchsaufbau und die Versuchsdurchführung präsentiert. Anschließend experimentierten die Kinder in Gruppen selbständig. Die abschließende Frage im Verlauf des Videos regte zum weiterführenden Nachdenken über die Funktionsweise eines Thermometers an.
Im vierten Schuljahr lesen die Kinder aktuell einen Kinderroman zum Thema „Verliebtsein“. Einzelne Bilder des Romans wurden digitalisiert, um diese mit den Schülern besprechen zu können und das Leseverständnis zu überprüfen. Dies motivierte die Schüler beim Lesen und förderte die mündliche Kommunikation. Außerdem erarbeiteten die Kinder ein Lesetagebuch. Die verschiedenen Aufgaben zu den einzelnen Kapiteln wurden in Tabellenform an der Tafel präsentiert, sodass jedes Kind zu jeder Zeit eine Übersicht zur Verfügung hat.Um im Deutschunterricht des zweiten Schuljahres die unterschiedlichen Satzarten abzufragen, wurden mit Hilfe des Testeditors verschiedene Aufgabenformate entwickelt. So konnte die Lehrerin am Ende der Einheit feststellen, ob alle Unterrichtsinhalte von den Schülern erworben wurden.

In Mathematik erleichtern und ergänzen die vielseitigen Tools, Spiele und Zeichenwerkzeuge den Unterricht täglich.
Wir hoffen mit diesen praktischen Beispielen einen kleinen Einblick in unsere tägliche Arbeit mit Mozabook geben zu können. In den nächsten Monaten ist die Ausstattung weiterer Klassenräume mit digitalen Tafelsystemen geplant. Die technischen Voraussetzungen werden derzeit geschaffen.
