### Narration

Alternating current can be generated by electromagnetic induction. When an armature is rotated between the two poles of a magnet, current is induced.

The right-hand rule determines the direction of the current. When the middle finger of your right hand points from the north pole of the magnet and the index finger in the direction of the motion of the armature, the thumb shows the direction of the current.

Due to the rotation, the strength and direction of the induced current changes periodically; the change can be described by a sine wave. In most European countries the voltage of electric networks is 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz. In the U.S. the voltage is 120 V with a 60 Hz frequency. In other countries the voltage might be 110, 120, 127, 220, 230 or 240 V, while the frequency is either 50 or 60 Hz.
