Narration

The common blackbird is a perching bird, which is widespread in Europe, North America and a large part of Asia; it has even been introduced into Australia. It usually lives in forests but it can be found in cities too. Common blackbirds mainly feed on insects, earthworms and even fruits. Sexual dimorphism is a characteristic feature of these animals; males are black while females are brownish.

Females usually lay 4 greenish eggs, which they incubate for 14 days.

The embryonic development of the nestlings takes place inside the eggs; the yolk serves as a nutrient reserve for the embryos. After fertilization, the germinal disc appears on the yolk’s surface. This germinal disc is the developing embryo. The yolk is surrounded by the egg white. The egg white consists of protein molecules and water, and serves to protect and provide nutrition for the embryo. The chalaza is part of the egg white; it holds the yolk inside the middle of the egg. The shell membrane is the inside layer of the eggshell. It consists of two cohesive layers, which only separate at the blunt end of the egg to form the air cell.
