Narration Show all

Genghis (Chinggis) Khan was the ruler of the Mongol Empire, which was essentially established when he was elected Great Khan in 1206. By the early 13th century the vast empire of one of the greatest conquerors of all time extended from China to Europe. Being a Great Khan (or Khagan), he was an autocratic leader who was thought to have divine power.

Mongols were nomads and, like his people, Genghis Khan lived in a yurt, which is a traditional portable tent. Of course, his yurt was larger and more decorated than those of his subjects.

He had several wives, the first, highest ranking wife being Börte. Her place in the yurt was on her husband's left, following tradition. Of their nine children, Ögedei became the successor after the death of the Great Khan in 1227.
