The purpose of the electricity supply network is to provide electricity for consumers.
It consists of two parts:
1. transmission network: power lines transmit electricity from generating power plants to electrical substations located near demand centres;
2. distribution network: it delivers electric power from substations to consumers.

The large amount of generated energy is transmitted through high voltage (110 kV or above) lines.
Overhead power lines transmit electricity to long distances, underground power lines are only used in densely populated areas, mainly because of high installation and maintenance costs.

Definitions of terms:

Core network: networks that collect and transmit generated electricity from power plants to main consumer hubs. These form the backbone of the national electricity supply network.

Main distribution network: networks that conduct electric current from the substation of the transmission network to the substation of the distribution network.

Distribution network: medium-voltage (10–35 kV) networks that connect transformer stations supplied by the main distribution network with transformer stations with consumer transformer stations or medium-voltage consumers.

Local distribution network: low-voltage networks providing electricity directly to consumers.

International co-operation network: networks connecting core networks of neighbouring countries for import and export purposes.
